The United States Department of Agriculture Awards the City of Winchester $550,000 to Plant and Maintain Trees in the City

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently awarded the City of Winchester $550,000 to plant and maintain trees in specified areas of the City. The project, part of the USDA’s $1 billion Urban and Community Forestry Grant Initiative, will improve the City’s tree canopy, help combat extreme heat and climate change, and provide equitable access to nature in urban neighborhoods.

City provides insights on Stormwater Improvement Program

WINCHESTER, Va – On September 23, Winchester residents gathered at Rouss City Hall for a workshop on the City's Stormwater Improvement Program. The Stormwater Improvement Program facilitates developing and maintaining the City's aging stormwater-related infrastructure to prevent flooding, improve water quality, and mitigate costly natural disasters.

The City of Winchester lifts Drought Emergency while transitioning back to a Drought Warning declaration, suspending water use restrictions.

Over this week, water volumes in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River have increased sufficiently for the City of Winchester to lift the City’s Drought Emergency effective 5:00 p.m. on September 15. Water levels remain low but are now above the threshold that triggered a Drought Emergency declaration, per the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Water Supply Plan and City Municipal Code. 

Drought Emergency triggers immediate mandatory water use restrictions

Due to record low water levels in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, the City of Winchester is declaring a Drought Emergency effective at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023. Since mid-August, the water volume in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River has averaged five to ten percent of normal volume, potentially threatening Winchester’s water supply.  

The City of Winchester declares Drought Warning to mitigate low water supply-related conditions

Based on recent climatic conditions and extremely low water levels in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, the City of Winchester is declaring a Drought Warning effective Thursday, August 31. To ensure the City’s continued water security, the Drought Warning calls City residents, businesses, governmental entities, and non-profits to enact an immediate and voluntary reduction of water use in the City by 10 percent.

City Operating Under a Drought Watch

Effective Tuesday, August 22, the City of Winchester is operating under a drought watch due to recent climatic conditions and water supply levels measured at the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. We are encouraging residents and businesses to help us collectively decrease water use in the City by 5 percent. This will help preserve our local water supply moving forward. 

New free transportation service for veterans

The City of Winchester salutes our veterans!

As part of our commitment to serve those that have served, the City’s public transportation provider, Wintran, is adding a free dial-a-ride service for veterans.

The new service will take Winchester resident veterans from their desired pick-up point in the City to and from the Winchester Veterans Administration Clinic located at 100 Dawson Drive, Winchester.
